While in Prague, the distinguished Renaissance composer Jacob Handl, also known as Jacobus Gallus, cultivated contacts at the court of the Emperor Rudolf II, from where he was granted printing privileges, an early form of copyright protection. He composed many charming choral works, which are simply waiting to be discovered. His Christmas motet Jerusalem gaude, with its gripping enthusiasm and successful echo effects, clearly reflects in musical form the joy felt at the arrival of the Lord. Differing groups of voices, which are frequently opposed to each other in dialogue, provide a delightful change from the sound of the full choir.
